Eugene Has A Greater Vision

Today, throughout our nation and around the world cities are replacing crumbling waterfront infrastructure with attractive public places. From shops to parks, From amphitheaters to wildlife habitat a viewing areas, a greater vision is possible.

Luckily, here in Eugene there are some stretches of the Willamette River that are already public land.  All we have to do to follow our greater vision. This vision, shared by the Eugene City Council,  is to include the public.  Include the public–in the planning phase, in the development phase, and in the realization. Include the public in the Willamette Riverfront, and the Willamette River in the daily lives of Eugene citizens and the River will thrive–and Eugene will thrive.

We have, in our midst, a magnificent, historical, and ecologically important natural resource – the 10th largest river in the continental United States. We can’t afford to let parking lots and private office buildings fringe our treasured river’s banks. We can’t afford to let the Oregon Research Institute in particular, or the Riverfront Research Park in general  monopolize another stretch of our precious  riverfront.

The Vision

We, Connecting Eugene share a vision with our elected officials.

The Eugene City Council’s Vision includes:

[We will] be responsible stewards of our physical assets and natural resources. We will sustain our clean air and water, beautiful parks and open spaces, livable and safe neighborhoods, and foster a vibrant downtown, including a stable infrastructure…

[We will be] a community that meets its present environmental, economic and social needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

[We will be] a community where arts and outdoors are integral to our social and economic well-being and are available to all.

Approved May 2009.

We share your vision!

Can you share in this vision with us? Can you help us make this dream a reality?

Current EWEB site redevelopment- A place for people

The current EWEB site on the Banks of the Willamette River is in the midst of a master planning phase for complete redevelopment. What is now private office building will be civic space. We will have shops and cafes, park benches and trees. We will have access to our Willamette River from Downtown Eugene. But, this vision is compromised by a 20-year-old plan to develop a private office complex on our riverfront.

Sign the petition, speak up. Together, we can realize a greater vision.
